The marking caliper is used to etch or transfer measurements to a piece. It combines the functions of a caliper and an engraver in one instrument. It consists of two jaws, one of which has a sharp edge used for engraving, while the other usually has a measuring scale inscribed on it. The user can adjust the distance between the jaws to match a specific measurement. Once the desired measurement is set, the scriber's jaw is placed on the work piece and the user can mark a line by pressing the point onto the surface.
