Measuring the pH in cosmetics is a highly critical control that must be done not only to ensure the consistency of the product's pH with the skin's pH, but also to ensure good quality, proper viscosity, color and odor of the product.
When we talk about typical cosmetic products (both for hair and skin), the ideal pH is between 4.5 ... 5.5.
The use of a pH meter with a special glass electrode is one of the well-known methods of measuring pH in cosmetics.
The glass electrode is ideal on the one hand because it is always easy to keep clean, however it requires careful handling due to its fragility. Modern electrodes have a special protection that makes them very robust.
Application of the pH electrode requires careful adjustment. It is necessary to observe all the rules regarding its application, cleaning and maintenance. Although pH tests are performed on additives or finished products such as shampoos, it is imperative to maintain the required ambient temperature, as its deviation can lead to incorrect readings.
The pH and maintaining the quality of cosmetics is one of the reasons why such products must be stored at specific temperatures. Some of them should be refrigerated or not exposed to direct sunlight or excessively hot temperatures.
