Metallography Equipment

Metallography is the study of the microstructure of metals and alloys using a variety of techniques, including the use of different machines. Some of the basic machines that are commonly used in metallography are:

1. Cutting Machines: These machines are used to cut the sample into the desired shape and size for further preparation. Some of the commonly used cutting machines include abrasive saws, diamond saws, and wire saws.

2. Mounting Machines: These machines are used to hold the sample in place during further preparation. The most common mounting machines are hot mounting presses and cold mounting machines.

3. Grinding and Polishing Machines: These machines are used to prepare the sample for microscopic examination by removing any surface defects, scratches or deformation induced during cutting or mounting. Some of the commonly used grinding and polishing machines include grinder-polishers, lapping machines, and polishing machines.

4. Etching Machines: These machines are used to reveal the microstructure of the sample by selectively removing material from the surface. The most common etching machines are electrolytic etching machines and chemical etching machines.

5. Microscopes: Microscopes are used to examine the microstructure of the sample at different magnifications. The most commonly used microscopes in metallography include optical microscopes, electron microscopes, and scanning probe microscopes.

6. Image Analysis Systems: These systems are used to capture, analyze and document the microstructural features of the sample. They are commonly used in conjunction with microscopes and provide quantitative data about the microstructure.
