How to choose

  • Taper (MT1–MT6) — must match your lathe's tailstock socket; small and mid-size lathes are usually MT2 or MT3.
  • Live or dead — a live center turns with the workpiece (high speeds, no lubrication); a dead center is more rigid and accurate at low speeds.
  • Carbide tip — on dead centers it resists friction heat and wear far better than steel.
  • Half notch — lets you face right up to the center without the tool fouling the center body.
  • Load & speed — heavy duty for large parts, high-speed / precision versions for fine work and high RPM.

FAQ

Which MT taper do I need? The same as your lathe's tailstock socket. If you don't know it, measure the large diameter of the tapered bore: ≈12.1 mm = MT1, ≈17.8 mm = MT2, ≈23.8 mm = MT3, ≈31.3 mm = MT4.

Live or dead center? Choose a live center for normal or high turning speeds. A dead center — especially carbide-tipped — is preferred for precision work at low speeds, with lubricant in the center.

What are drive dogs and face drivers for? They transmit drive to the workpiece when turning between centers, without needing a chuck.
