Magnetic bases

Magnetic bases

Base types, clamping mechanisms and selection criteria for rigid support of your indicator.

A magnetic base is the tool used to hold a dial or test indicator in place. Rigid support of the indicator is essential for an accurate measurement, so it matters that you pick the right base for your application.

The 4 types in detail

Standard magnetic base
01

Standard

Two armsPrice €

The most common base is built from two arms. One screws straight into the magnetic base and the other attaches to it. A clamp links the two arms together and lets you move the indicator along the length of the arm.

Central clamping magnetic base
02

Central clamping

Single armPrice €€

These have a single arm joined to the magnetic base on a pivot that lets it swivel. What sets them apart is how easily, quickly and precisely you can reposition them: you adjust the whole base just by loosening one screw.

Ideal forFrequent, quick repositioning
Hydraulic magnetic base
03

Hydraulic

Single arm · hydraulicPrice €€€

These are central clamping bases too, the difference being that the hydraulic mechanism delivers even greater clamping force on the arms, for an even more rigid support solution.

Ideal forMaximum support rigidity
Articulated magnetic base
04

Articulated

Snake armPrice €€

These carry just one arm: a snake style chain of joints that lets it bend and move with exceptional flexibility. They are the best choice for hard to reach spots, where a standard base would struggle to get into position.

Good to know

Where it grips

Magnetic bases only hold on ferromagnetic surfaces (steel, cast iron), not on aluminium or non magnetic stainless steel.

On/off switch

Most bases have a switch that turns the magnet on and off, for easy placement and repositioning.

Indicator compatibility

Check how your indicator mounts (Ø8mm stem, dovetail, etc.) so it matches the arm of the base.

Clean surface

For maximum holding force, the seating surface should be clean, flat and free of dust or burrs.
