The UNC thread belongs to the Unified Thread Standard (UTS), mainly used in the USA and Canada, but sometimes also in Australia, the United Kingdom, or Japan. It is also found in Germany in special cases, such as in tripods or in securing screws in computer cases. The values in the UNC table correspond to the specifications of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), responsible for overseeing this standard. The standard for the UNC thread in the table is ANSI B1.1.

The thread in the UNC table is also called American coarse thread, with a flank angle of 60° and is similar to the ISO metric thread. It is a thread with dimensions in inches.

The names in the UNC table include the abbreviation UNC, the outer diameter in inches, and the number of threads per inch. For threads under 1/4 inch, the English abbreviation No. with a number is used. These thread sizes in the ANSI standard are designated with numbers from 1 to 12.

Tap Wrench

Tap taps are precision cutting tools used to create an internal thread in a hole (e.g. in nuts or holes in metal). This process is called tapping and requires the use of a special tap wrench or machine (drill/CNC).

  • Main Categories:Hand (3-piece set): Consists of the taper (conical), the intermediate and the bottoming tap. They are used sequentially to distribute the cutting load and ensure perpendicularity.Machine: Designed for a single pass. They are divided into Spiral Point (push the chip forward - for through holes) and Spiral Flute (pull the chip out - for blind holes).
  • Materials & Coatings: Usually made from HSS or HSS-E (Cobalt) for higher resistance to heat. They often have a TiN (gold color) coating to reduce friction.
  • Important Rule: Before use, the appropriate hole must be drilled. The general formula for metric threads is:$D_{hole} = D_{nominal} - P$(Where $D$ is the diameter and $P$ is the thread pitch).
