Measuring pH in cosmetics is a high-criticality check that must be done not only to ensure the consistency of the product's pH with the skin's pH, but also to ensure good quality, appropriate viscosity, color, and odor of the product.
When we talk about typical cosmetic products (both for hair and skin), the ideal pH is between 4.5 ... 5.5.
Using a pH meter with a special glass electrode is one of the known methods for measuring pH in cosmetics.
The glass electrode is ideal partly because it is always easy to keep clean, yet it requires careful handling due to its fragility. Modern electrodes have special protection that makes them very robust.
Applying the pH electrode requires careful adjustment. It is necessary to follow all rules regarding its application, cleaning, and maintenance. Although pH tests are performed on additives or final products such as shampoos, it is imperative to maintain the required ambient temperature, as deviation can lead to incorrect measurements.
pH and maintaining the quality of cosmetics is one of the reasons why such products must be stored at specific temperatures. Some of them must be kept in the refrigerator or not exposed to direct sunlight or excessively hot temperatures.
