Grinding wheels
The colour of a bench grinding wheel is not decorative: it tells you the abrasive it is made from. There are two main families — aluminium oxide (grey and white) for steels, and silicon carbide (green and black) for carbide and non-ferrous metals. The wrong wheel on the wrong material glazes, burns or loads up.
