For drilling stainless steel or "inox" as it is sometimes called, a cobalt drill bit or a carbide drill bit is recommended. These types of drill bits are made from high-speed steel coated with cobalt or tungsten carbide, which are more durable and suitable for drilling harder materials. Cobalt drill bits have higher heat resistance, making them ideal for drilling stainless steel, and carbide drill bits have a harder and more wear-resistant material, making them ideal for drilling abrasive materials such as stainless steel.

It is also important to use cutting fluid or lubricant when drilling stainless steel to prevent excessive heat buildup and reduce the risk of the drill bit breaking or the material being damaged. Additionally, slow speeds and high-pressure cutting are recommended to avoid material hardening and ensure a clean, precise hole.

What characteristics should a drill bit have to cut stainless steel? The following criteria must be met to achieve a good drilling result.

drill bits for stainless steel

Stainless steel is a very hard material and therefore difficult to cut. Therefore, the drill bit should be made from HSSE-Co 5 (5% cobalt content), HSSE-Co 8 (8% cobalt content), or even better solid carbide. In contrast, an HSS drill bit, which is very soft, will overheat immediately.

Tip Angle
The tip angle is located at the head of the drill bit. For hard materials such as stainless steel, the tip angle should be large, e.g., 130° or 135°. For soft materials, the usual angle is 118°. With a large angle, a greater part of the cutting edge engages with the workpiece during drilling. This also means that more force is applied to the workpiece and higher contact pressure (high feed) is required.

Helix Angle
The helix angle determines the chip formation process. Small spiral angles are used for hard materials. Therefore, the helix angle should be small, between 20-40°. The helix angle and tip angle are the determining factors for application on hard or soft materials.

Coating

The TiAlN coating, because it has high heat resistance, is recommended for cutting stainless steel.

The metal drill bits are cutting tools designed for drilling holes in a wide range of materials, from plain structural steel to hardened alloys and stainless steel. Their performance depends on the material of manufacture, the cutting edge angle and the coating they have.

  • Main Material Categories:HSS (High Speed Steel): Suitable for plain steel and soft metals. They are distinguished into HSS-R (rolled), HSS-G (ground for higher accuracy).HSS-Co (Cobalt): Contain 5% or 8% cobalt. They are highly resistant to high temperatures and ideal for stainless steel (Inox).Carbide (Solid Carbide): Top hardness for industrial use in CNC, allowing very high cutting speeds.
  • Tip Geometry: Most metal drill bits have an angle of 118° for general use or 135° (Split Point) for self-centering without the need for center punching.
  • Coatings: Layers such as TiN (Titanium Nitride - gold color) are used to reduce friction, or TiAlN for maximum thermal resistance.
