The VDI 3323 standard defines a unified classification system for metallic and non-metallic materials according to their machinability characteristics, in order to facilitate the selection of suitable cutting tools, cutting parameters, and machining strategies. The standard is based on ISO material codes (such as P, M, K, N, S, H) and provides detailed subcategorization based on chemical composition, mechanical properties, and cutting behavior.
It is widely used by tool manufacturers and metalworking industries to achieve standardization and consistency in evaluating tool suitability and machining performance.
